Review: Summoned to Thirteenth Grave

Grim Reaper Charley Davidson is back in the final installment of Darynda Jones’ New York Times bestselling paranormal series–Summoned to Thirteenth Grave.

Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper extraordinaire, is pissed. She’s been kicked off the earthly plane for eternity –which is exactly the amount of time it takes to make a person stark, raving mad. But someone’s looking out for her, and she’s allowed to return after a mere hundred years in exile. Is it too much to hope for that not much has changed? Apparently it is. Bummer.

She’s missed her daughter. She’s missed Reyes. She’s missed Cookie and Garrett and Uncle Bob. But now that she’s back on earth, it’s time to put to rest burning questions that need answers. What happened to her mother? How did she really die? Who killed her? And are cupcakes or coffee the best medicine for a broken heart? It all comes to a head in an epic showdown between good and evil in this final smart and hilarious novel.

Warning! Mild spoilers below.

Its finally here.

The final installment to the Charley Davidson series. Its hard to believe it but its really here. As most fans will be, I’m feeling the blues because its the end of the Charley Davidson series. However, we all knew this day would come especially since Darynda Jones announced she was going to plan a spin off series with a certain character. More about that later, let’s move along.

The last time we saw Charley, she had brought back Amber back to life. Sadly, Charley was warned before not to do it and as punishment was exiled. We start off Summoned to Thirteenth Grave with Charley who’s been exiled to a place full of darkness. Luckily, her 100 year exile comes to an end and she’s freed. Charley returns to Earth where she immediately receives a warm welcome back from Reyes. Once that’s over, Charley learns its only been 10 days since she disappeared. Not only that but when the god glass broke it left behind a portal to the hell dimension. As a result, demons have been invading and possessing people in the city. The public think its some sort of virus but Charley knows differently and she only has a couple of days to fix this mess. If that was not enough on her plate, Charley also has to help the spirit of a little boy and solve what turns out to be her mother’s murder which will help her stop everything from ending.

Overall, Summoned to Thirteenth Grave was a perfect ending to Charley and Reyes’ story. I do not feel depressed because I know we’ll see them again in the spinoff with Beep and Osh. The same goes with our favorite side characters who have tagged along since First Grave on the Right. I look forward to seeing certain characters all grown up to help Beep in her fight against Lucifer. I have to admit that there were certain twits I was not expecting. Kudos to Darynda Jones for unveiling those shocking twists! Now all we have to do it wait. Wait until we get news on the spinoff series which I’m sure will be just as great as the Charley Davidson series.
