Review: One Fell Sweep

Dina DeMille may run the nicest Bed and Breakfast in Red Deer, Texas, but she caters to a very particular kind of guest… the kind that no one on Earth is supposed to know about. Guests like a former intergalactic tyrant with an impressive bounty on her head, the Lord Marshal of a powerful vampire clan, and a displaced-and-superhot werewolf; so don’t stand too close, or you may be collateral damage.

But what passes for Dina’s normal life is about to be thrown into chaos. First, she must rescue her long-distant older sister, Maud, who’s been exiled with her family to a planet that functions as the most lawless penal colony since Botany Bay. Then she agrees to help a guest whose last chance at saving his civilization could bring death and disaster to all Dina holds dear. Now Gertrude Hunt is under siege by a clan of assassins. To keep her guests safe and to find her missing parents, Dina will risk everything, even if she has to pay the ultimate price. Though Sean may have something to say about that!

Warning! Mild spoilers below.

One Fell Sweep starts off with our favorite innkeeper, Dina receiving a message from her sister Maud that she’s in danger. Dina calls in a favor from Arland, who takes her and Sean to planet Kahari to save Maud and her five year old half-vampire daughter Helen. Once the rescue is complete, everyone heads back to the Gertrude Hunt. That includes Arland who decides to stay awhile after becoming interested in Maud despite the fact she’s done dealing with vampires due to the things she’s gone through. Its not long before Dina receives a request of protection and help for an alien race (Hiru) that is being hunted down and exterminated by the Draziri, another alien race. Although its risky for her family and guests, Dina can’t say no to someone in need. Not to mention that Dina has a chance to finally get answers about her parents whereabouts.

Overall, One Fell Sweep was so much fun to read! Ilona Andrews gave us action, humor, and a lot of romance between Dina and Sean which fans have been waiting for! I was also glad to finally got to meet more of Dina’s family because Maud and Helen were a wonderful addition to this installment. I really fell in love with Helen who was so cute and entertaining throughout the book. I felt bad for Arland since he never had a chance with Dina but now it looks like he might get his HEA after all. As much as I love Dina and Sean as a couple, I’m looking forwarding to reading Maud and Arland’s story . Their relationship is not going to be easy especially because of Maud’s experience with vampires. Dina’s story may be over for now but we have an open ending which means there’s a chance for more stories to tell and it looks like Maud’s the next one!
