Review: Secrets In Death

A new novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series: Lt. Eve Dallas must separate rumors from reality when a woman who traffics in other people’s secrets is silenced.

The chic Manhattan nightspot Du Vin is not the kind of place Eve Dallas would usually patronize, and it’s not the kind of bar where a lot of blood gets spilled. But that’s exactly what happens one cold February evening.

The mortally wounded woman is Larinda Mars, a self-described “social information reporter,” or as most people would call it, a professional gossip. As it turns out, she was keeping the most shocking stories quiet, for profitable use in her side business as a blackmailer. Setting her sights on rich, prominent marks, she’d find out what they most wanted to keep hidden and then bleed them dry. Now someone’s done the same to her, literally—with a knife to the brachial artery.

Eve didn’t like Larinda Mars. But she likes murder even less. To find justice for this victim, she’ll have to plunge into the dirty little secrets of all the people Larinda Mars victimized herself. But along the way, she may be exposed to some information she really didn’t want to know…

Warning! Mild spoilers below.

Secrets In Death starts off with Channel 75’s entertainment reporter, Larinda Mars, being murdered. Coincidentally, our favorite cop Eve Dallas happens to be in the same place but was unable save Larinda. As Eve begins to investigate, she soon discovers that Larinda’s murder is most likely to be the result of her being a blackmailer. So sadly for Eve investigates, the number of Larinda’s victims increases which means the identity of the potential murderer won’t be easy to find. As always Eve is determined to bring Larinda’s murderer to justice even when she discovers that Larinda was planning on making her another one of her blackmail victims.

Overall, Secrets In Death was another enjoyable addition to the In Death series. J.D. Robb never ceases to amaze me with her ability to create new plots that leave you reading the book until you reach the last page. Sure it took awhile for the plot to pick up but once you’re past that point, it gets exciting! Also, it was lovely to see how much Eve has changed since Naked In Death. In this installment, you definitely see a softer and protective side of Eve like when she discovered some of her friends and Roarke were targeted as potential blackmail victims by Larinda Mars. Like I said before, another wonderful entry to the series and I can’t wait for the release of the next installment, Dark In Death which already sounds like its going to be as good as this installment.
