Review: Bitter Bite

Which is stronger: blood ties or a battle-tested friendship?

It’s not easy being queen bee of an underworld abuzz with crooks and killers. Wielding my potent Ice and Stone elemental magic will only get me so far—my real secret is my tight-knit makeshift family, a motley crew of cops and criminals, dwarves and playboys. My foster brother Finnegan Lane is my right-hand man, but when his suddenly not-dead relative comes back into the picture, I’m the one on the outside looking in.

It’s funny how life works: one minute your best friend is rock-steady, and the next he’s doe-eyed and buying into this whole loving-relative routine to the point of ignoring you. I’d like to be happy for Finn, I really would. But all of my instincts are telling me that beneath the syrupy sweet demeanor and old-fashioned charm, this sudden interloper is planning something. The whole shtick leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. This person might have avoided the grave once, but I’ll put anyone who hurts Finn in the ground—for good

Warning! Mild spoilers below.

Jennifer Estep has done it again with her latest installment, Bitter Bite, of the Elemental Assassin series!

In Bitter Bite, Gin is faced with a new threat in Ashland and it will put her relationship with Finn, her foster brother/right hand man, to the test. Why? The threat is Deirdre Shaw, a powerful ice elemental who’s Finn’s long thought dead mother. So of course Gin is going to doubt her motives. However, Gin soon finds herself torn between supporting Fin and trying to convince him that his mother isn’t the loving mother he thinks she is.

Now I will not lie but I was disappointed with Finn on he completely shut Gin and company out just so he can focus completely on “poor victimized mother” Deirdre. Don’t worry, Deirdre’s true motives and maternal feelings are revealed so now Gin can kill her. Easy right? WRONG! Let’s just say that Deirdre was nothing more than a pawn and Gin gains important information about Gin’s past. Important information that is enough to shake her world and make her search for answers. Also, I forgave Finn’s attitude by the end of Bitter Bite after seeing a side of Finn we never thought we would see. Someone who just wanted to bond with the mother he never had.

Once again Jennifer Estep keeps showing us that she’s not done yet with her Elemental Assassin series. Just when you think Jennifer Estep cannot surprise you anymore she pulls the rug from under us with a new game changer plot. Good thing too because I do not want it to end.

Now the waiting for, Unraveled, book 15 of the Elemental Assassin series has begun!

So mark your calendars for August 30, 2016 for Unraveled!

Also, do not forget that before that on July 18, 2016, Jennifer Estep will be releasing Unwanted, a Elemental Assassin novella!
